It might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes the easiest way to gain more time, money, and energy is simply to have less.
For me, this process began with decluttering my home. As a parent, I had become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things we had accumulated. Anyone who has done a thorough purge knows the remarkable sense of relief that follows. It’s easy to forget the weight that excess possessions can place on our minds and our lives. We carry that burden with us as we move through the world.
The more I simplified, the more energy I seemed to have. With fewer things competing for my attention, I could live more intentionally with what I chose to invite into my life. This awareness extended beyond material objects. It began to shape how I spent my time, my money, and my energy.
Buying less meant purchasing only what I truly needed. Cleaning became easier and more enjoyable, my home felt like a sanctuary, and I began to notice which things in my life brought joy and which felt like a burden. Saying no became easier because the difference between the two became much clearer.
Consuming less naturally reduced my footprint as a consumer and left more money in my pocket. While I sometimes spent more on individual purchases, I spent far less overall. I could feel good about the choices I was making, and the sense of ease around spending money was incredibly freeing. Approaching consumption with awareness and intention felt empowering.
Simplifying also gave me back time. I was no longer spending as much energy managing things — not just physical objects, but all the commitments and expectations we often allow into our lives without noticing. Becoming aware of what felt joyful versus burdensome helped me make decisions more consciously. Life became simpler to manage, and as a result I became more productive, more focused, and more present.
What began with simplifying my physical environment gradually transformed my mental and emotional world as well. I felt lighter, freer, and more excited about the life I was creating.
Today, I value simplicity because of the ease it has brought into my life. Over time, simplifying helped me recognize my needs more clearly, which made it easier to say a confident no to the things that didn’t align.
Consuming more consciously has also made my impact on the world feel more intentional. This shift naturally reduces strain on the environment and on others. With more time, money, and energy available, I can direct those resources toward things that feel meaningful.
This perspective is something I bring to North of Nothing. My hope is that the sense of ease I’ve found through simplifying is reflected in the brand and products I create, and that it helps others experience a little more peace in the way they consume.
Much love,
Jenn
